Culture and tradition in all its forms plays a decisive role in how communities manage their survival, their associations with each other and the setting in which they survive. In mountainous regions around the world, traditional societies and conservation have co-evolved. The values, behaviors and local cultures are primarily shaped and strengthened by the connection of mountain communities with natural environment that sustains them. Mountain ecosystems, communities and cultures are always together, where the sanctified beliefs are inextricably bound to routine life of rural folk.

The socio-cultural aspects of human existence in mountainous communities have both intrinsic and purposeful value. The traditional systems of survival together with the rituals have evolvedover the years. Tradition is the means that stops people from changing cultures but tradition need not be alike with culture - it is an umbrella phrase for elements whichformulate substantial rules that people wish to symbolize as static. The role of culture in the lives of mountain communities and their relationship with culture and management of ecosystems must be accepted and valued. Institute of Integrated Himalayan Studies, located within the premises of Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, has been making efforts to maintain a balance of complex relationships between socio-cultural, ecological, economic and physical systems. Research has been carried out by the Institute on the issues of prime importance. It has completed more than hundred fifty research projects. Vignettes of Himachal Himalayas is an effort to visualize the Himachal through the eyes of eminent researchers from various fields, who have portrayed the diverse facets of life in their research endeavors. Two volumes recapitulate the research ventures supported by the Institute..
