Located on the hill top campus of the Himachal Pradesh University, the Department of Physics was established in the year 1969 as part of the Regional Centre of Punjab University, Chandigarh. Later with the establishment of Himachal Pradesh University in 1970, it came into existence as a full fledged State University Department. The aim of the Department since its inception has been to provide up to date learning resources to our students to meet the requirement of quality manpower in Physics for teaching, research and other vocations.

Over the years, the Department has established itself as a centre of excellence for teaching and research. The Department offers M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The intake for the M.Sc. and M.Phil. programmes is 52 and 15 respectively. Presently, there are 10 faculty members in the Department. The teaching and research activities of the Department focus on Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Electronic Science, Neutrino Physics, Grand Unified Theories, Glasses and Ceramics, Soft Condensed Matter Physics, Ferrites, Magnetic Nanoparticles, Dielectrics, Ferroelectrics and Multiferroics.
The Department has state of the art high end computing & Workstation facilities. The sophisticated experimental facilities of the Department include Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Radiant Precession Multiferroic Tester, Impedance Analyzer, RF/DC-Sputtering units and Keithly Source Meter. The Department also offers consultancy in characterization of technological important materials using X-ray Diffraction (XRD)Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) and UV-VIS Spectrometer.
The Department’s continuous stride in teaching and research excellence over many years has been duly acknowledged by the University Grant Commission, New Delhi and Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi resulting in the endowment of financial assistances through schemes such as DRS-I (2009-2014), DRS-II (2015-2020), FIST-I (2002-2007), FIST-II (2009-2014). Just for a glimpse, during last five years (2015-2020), the faculty members have published more than 100 research papers in international journals and produced more than 24 Ph.Ds. The Department received grant of Rs. 1.8 Crore under various schemes and about Rs. 1.25 Crore worth sponsored individual research projects over the period.
