The Institute of Tribal Studies (ITS) at the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla was established vide University’s Executive Council’s Resolution No. 10, dated January 31, 1994. The aims, objectives and the structure of the ITS were approved by the Executive Council in its meeting held on 12 April 1994 vide item no. 41 and the Institute became operational from the academic session 1995-96 onwards. The Institute acquired it’s present form in 2008 when it secured TRI Status with Sate and Central support and has since been operational as a State and Centre funded Tribal Research Institute (TRI) named the Institute of Tribal Studies (ITS), Himachal Pradesh University. It was formally inaugurated in 2009.
