Established in 1971 the Department of Political Science is one of the founding departments of Himachal Pradesh University.

The department has till now produced a galaxy of scholars, statesmen, bureaucrats and leaders. Former Afghanistan President Dr. Hamid Karzai, BJP national president J.P. Nadda and several other luminaries have brought glories to the department. The department offers M.A., M. Phil and Ph. D degrees and provides necessary input to the students about the career building and the future outer world engagements. The department is consistently engaged in the research areas that extend in geographical scope across the Indian state, cover both historical and contemporary sources, and address the social, political and philosophical issues in the larger interests of the society. Dedicated to the highest levels of teaching, research and institution-building, the department strives to offer leadership in advancing the scientific study of politics. We have broadly focused on the areas of international relations, foreign policy, election studies (at both local and state level), political theory, tribal issues and case studies especially in the western Himalayan zone.
