It is my privilege to welcome you to Himachal Pradesh University which has a picturesque campus spreading across an area of over 200 acres. The majestic buildings of the campus are complemented by rhododendron, silver oak, pine and deodar trees offering a salubrious climate and amiable atmosphere for higher studies and research. Himachal Pradesh University, situated at Summer Hill, a Suburb of Shimla a leading teaching and research institution in the state of Himachal Pradesh, was established in the year 1970. It is one of the foremost affiliating-cum-residential universities in India. The University has 12 faculties out of which nine are campus based. There are 29 departments and more than 18 specialized centres.

Department of Physics under faculty of Physical Sciences has established itself as a centre of excellence for teaching and research.  Along with M.Sc. and M.Phil. programmes with intake 52 and 15 respectively, about 44 research scholars are presently pursuing their Ph.D. degree out of which 15 Ph.D students are awarded with various fellowships like UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, UGC-NFSC, HPU-JRF, INSPIRE from UGC, DST etc. which is truly commendable. Different elevated research facilities established in the Physics Department are attracting researchers all over the country. The research projects, publications in journals of international repute with high impact factor & citation index, collaborative research work, organizing & participation in different research activities by the faculty members are admirable. The organization and participation in different activities such as Swachata Abhiyan, Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Seminars / Lectures / Workshops for college / school students to inculcate scientific temper etc. are also indicating social conscientiousness of Physics Department. The former students of this department are serving at all corners of the country especially in reputed institutions and labs of national importance as well as abroad.

I am confident that Department of Physics will continue to strive for excellence in teaching, research and extension activities and scaling great heights in the days to come.
