Welcome to the Population Research Center (PRC) Shimla at Department of Economics, Himachal Pradesh university campus. PRC an interdisciplinary center for population-related research was established in 1989 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of India, New Delhi to conduct and promote research in population studies and to assist the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi with policy input and feedback on population and health issues.

The main focus of the Centre's research has been on: Dynamics of Population Change, Fertility, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), Mortality, Maternal and Child Health, Health & Family Welfare, KAP of Family Planning, Education and Health in Rural Areas, Migration and Urbanization. The PRC is actively involved in monitoring, evaluation and programme support research in areas of Health and Family Welfare and other population and development related issues with a special focus on the Himachal Pradesh. The centre offers a Post Graduate Diploma in Women Development Studies which emphasizes research using Sociological and demographic tools and techniques grounded in population theory and knowledge.

The PRC mainly undertakes research sponsored by the MOHFW, GOI and Health Department of Haryana state. Apart from this it is also involved in collaborative research Projects with other National and International agencies, as well as its own initiated research work and independent work by the staff. Examples of other recent projects are “ National Family Health Survey-4 (NFHS-4)”, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and “A Study to Explore the Causes of Declining Sex Ratio in the Age Group of 0-6 Years in Himachal Pradesh”, H.P. Planning Department, Government of Himachal Pradesh, 2015-16.

As Director, I am very fortunate to work with two outstanding Researchers Dr. Savita Thakur Joshi and Dr. Niranjana Bhandari. PRC benefits from a wonderful office staff which includes Shri Ravinder Sharma and Sri Ravi Rana.
